I am back in India for a short while - and while waiting for the power to come back on so I can get some more work done I decided to clean up my personal email. And as always, I found another testament to my claim that we were all significantly cleverer while still studying at Tech. Here is an email conversation on the mailing list for my house:

Someone wrote:

Why is it necessary to put your two cents in, but it’s only a penny for
your thoughts? Where does that extra penny go?

And someone replied:

It is better to give than to receive. You’re paying two cents to
contribute your own thoughts, but only offering 1 to receive them. The
extra penny goes for the better quality.

Ah.. those good old days
